Biography of Lab Director

SUMMARY:

Dr. Jian-yu Lu ( * Chinese Name * ) (S'86--M'88--SM'99--F'08) received the B.S. degree in electrical engineering in February 1982 from Fudan University, Shanghai, China; the M.S. degree in acoustics in 1985 from Tongji University, Shanghai, China; and the Ph.D. degree in biomedical engineering in 1988 from Southeast University, Nanjing, China. (Precollege: Fuzhou No.1 Middle School, Fuzhou, China; Fuzhou Education College Affiliated No. 1 Elementary School, Fuzhou, China.)

From 1997 to the present, Dr. Lu has been a full professor in the Department of Bioengineering at The University of Toledo (UT), Toledo, OH, USA, and since 1998, he has been an adjunct professor in the College of Medicine. He served as a graduate director of the Department of Bioengineering at UT from 1999–2002. Before joining UT, he was an associate professor of biophysics at the Mayo Medical School and an associate consultant at the Department of Physiology and Biophysics, Mayo Clinic/Foundation, Rochester, MN, USA. His research interests are in acoustic imaging and tissue identification, medical ultrasonic transducers, and ultrasonic beam forming and propagation.

Dr. Lu received the Outstanding Paper Award from the IEEE Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control (UFFC) society for two of his papers published in the IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control (TUFFC) in 1992 for the discovery of X waves that, in theory, can propagate to an infinite distance without spreading (diffraction-free). These waves have potential applications in medical imaging (in both ultrasound and optics) and physics. Dr. Lu received the Edward C. Kendall (a Nobel Laureate at Mayo Clinic) Award from the Mayo Alumni Association, Mayo Foundation, in 1992, for his meritorious research; the FIRST Award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 1991; and the Biomedical Engineering Research Grant Award from the Whitaker Foundation in 1991, in addition to long-term R01-type NIH grant award.

Dr. Lu served as an Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE TUFFC from January 1, 2002 to December 31, 2007 for two terms. He was the General Chair of the 2008 IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium (IUS) that was held from November 2-5, 2008, in Beijing, China. He also served as the Technical Program Committee (TPC) Chair of the 2001 IEEE IUS - a joint meeting with the World Congress on Ultrasonics (WCU) held in Atlanta, GA, USA, in October 2001. He has been a member of the TPC of Group I (Medical Ultrasonics) of the IEEE IUS conferences for many years and was an Exhibition Chair of several past IEEE IUS conferences. He is now serving a three-year term starting January 1, 2009 as an elected UFFC Administrative Committee (AdCom) member. He also serves on the UFFC Ultrasonics Committee, Constitution and Bylaws Review Committee, and Web Committee.

Dr. Lu is a Fellow of IEEE, a Fellow of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM), and a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), in addition to being a member of other professional societies such as the Acoustical Society of America (ASA), American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and a life member of Sigma Xi.
