Course Instructions


Welcome to the course!

The schedule given below will be helpful to you for starting the course work. You are free to choose your own style of reading/learning/assessment. Instructions are given for each week to give you an idea of completing the course material and assignments.

NOTE: If you are unable to answer 80% of the questions in the section you went through then read that section again. Reading assignments from the text book may also be assigned in the class.



WEEK 1

1.   Go through the presentations on INTRODUCTION TO AIR POLLUTION: PART 1 and PART 2.

2.   Read topics on “Industrial Accidents”, ”Air Pollutants”, “Sources of Air Pollution”, ”Emission Inventory” and “Air Pollution Index” from the INTRODUCTION chapter of the course.

3.   Read Chapter 1 from the text book.

4.   Start going through the problems given in the INTRODUCTION SECTION OF THE AIR POLLUTION WORKBOOK.

5.   Start Assignment #1.


WEEK 2

1.    Complete going through the presentations on INTRODUCTION TO AIR POLLUTION: PART 1 and PART 2.

2.    Read topics on “Air Pollution in Asia” and “Related Internet Sites” from INTRODUCTION chapter of the course. Start reading the topic of Natural Cleansing Processes in the Atmosphere.

3.    Complete Assignment #1.

4.    Complete Project #1.

5.    Go through the problems given in the INTRODUCTION SECTION OF THE AIR POLLUTION WORKBOOK.


WEEK 3

1.    Go through the presentations on NATURAL CLEANSING PROCESSES OF THE ATMOSPHERE.

2.    Complete reading the topic of Natural Cleansing Processes in the Atmosphere.

3.    Read topics on “General Atmospheric Circulation” and “Atmospheric Thermodynamics” from Basic Meteorological Processes.

4.    Complete review of the problems given in the INTRODUCTION SECTION OF THE AIR POLLUTION WORKBOOK portion of the course.

5.    Read Chapter 3 from the text book.

6.    Start solving Assignment #2.

7.    Complete Project #2.

8.    Read Appendix-A from the text book.


WEEK 4

1.    Go through the presentations on BASIC METEOROLOGICAL PROCESSES.

2.    Read topics on “Effect of meteorology on plume dispersion” and “Miscellaneous Topics” (Wind Velocity and Beaufort Scale) from Basic Meteorological Processes.

3.    Go through the problems given in the METEOROLOGY SECTION OF THE AIR POLLUTION WORKBOOK.

4.    Complete Assignment #2 and start Assignment #3.

5.    Read Appendix-B from the text book.


WEEK 5

1.    Go through the presentations on AIR QUALITY REGULATIONS: PART 1 and PART 2.

2.   Read topics on “Air Quality Regulations in U. S.”, “Air Quality Standards”, “PSD Program”, “NA Area Regulation” and “NESHAP’s” from the Air Quality Regulations portion of the course.

3.    Go through the problems given in the REGULATIONS SECTION OF THE AIR POLLUTION WORKBOOK.

4.    Complete Assignment #3.

5.    Complete Project #3.

6.    Review Appendix-A and Appendix-B from the text book.


WEEK 6

1.    Complete going through the presentations on AIR QUALITY REGULATIONS: PART 1 and PART 2.

2.    Read topics on “NSPS’s”, “Stack Height Regulations”, “Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990”, “International Treaties-ISO 14000” and “Related Internet Sites” from the Air Quality Regulations portion of the course.

3.    Complete review of the METEOROLOGY and the REGULATIONS sections of the air pollution workbook.

4.    Read Chapter 2 from the text book.

5.    Complete Assignment #4.

6.    Complete Project #4.


WEEK 7

1.    Go through the presentations on AIR QUALITY MODELING: PART 1 and PART 2.

2.    Read topics on “Types of Plumes”, “Flow Regimes of a Plume” and “Plume Rise” from the Air Quality Modeling portion of the course.

3.    Go through the MODELING SECTION OF THE AIR POLLUTION WORKBOOK.

4.    Start reading Chapter 4 from the text book.

5.    Complete Assignment #5.

6.    Complete Project #5.

7.    Read Appendix-C from the text book.


WEEK 8

1.    Go through the presentations on AIR QUALITY MODELING: PART 1 and PART 2.

2.    Read topics on “Ambient Air Concentration Modeling” “Gaussian Dispersion Models” and “Plume Dispersion Parameters”, “Miscellaneous Topics”, “Computer Programs” and “Related Internet Sites” from the Air Quality Modeling.

3.    Complete review of the MODELING SECTION OF THE AIR POLLUTION WORKBOOK portion of the course.

4.    Start Assignment #6.


WEEK 9

1.    Go through the presentations on AIR QUALITY MODELING: PART 1 and PART 2.

2.    Read topics on “Miscellaneous Topics”, “Computer Programs” and “Related Internet Sites” from the Air Quality Modeling.

3.    Complete Assignment #6.

4.    Complete Project #6.


WEEK 10

1.    Go through the presentations on TECHNOLOGY FOR AIR POLLUTION: PART 1 and PART 2.

2.    Read topics on “SO2”, “VOC and Hydrocarbons”, “Particulate”, “NOx”, “CO”, “Odor” and “Related Internet Sites” from the Technology for Air Pollution.

3.    Read portions of Chapters 5-8 from the text book. You have to make sure that you have gone through the design equations for particulate control devices.

4.    Complete Assignment #7.

5.    Complete Project #7.

6.    Read Appendix-D from the book.


WEEK 11

1.    Complete going through the presentations on TECHNOLOGY FOR AIR POLLUTION: PART 1 and PART 2.

2.    Complete review of the CONTROL SECTION OF THE AIR POLLUTION WORKBOOK.

3.    Start reading the topics on “Why Study Effect?”, “How Effects Are Studied?” and “Effects of Various Pollutants” from the Effects of Air Pollutants.

4.    Go through the ECONOMICS SECTION OF THE AIR POLLUTION WORKBOOK.

5.    Complete Assignment #8.

6.    Complete Project #8.


WEEK 12

1.    Go through presentations on the EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTANTS and RISK.

2.    Read the topics on “Effects of Criteria Pollutants” and “Risk Assessment and Related Internet Sites” from the Effects of Air Pollutants.

3.    Complete review of the ECONOMICS SECTION OF  THE AIR POLLUTION WORKBOOK.

4.    Complete Assignment #9.

5.    Complete Project #9.


WEEK 13

1.    Read topics on “Toxic Pollution”, “Greenhouse Effect/Global Warming”, “Ground Level Ozone Pollution”, “Ozone Depletion”, “Acid Rain”, “Noise Pollution” and “Related Internet Sites” from the Current Issues.

2.    Go through the AIR POLLUTION INSTRUMENTATION chapter of the course.

3.    Read the topic of Air Pollution Instrumentation from the book.

4.    Complete Project #10.


WEEK 14

1.    Review web sites for more information on all the Chapters. See the various links that helps you to know in detail about all the topics.

2.    Go through presentations on Air Pollution Forecasting, Energy Supply Strategies, Global Climate Change, and Noise Pollution. Also, go through other related websites for more information about air pollution engineering.

3.    Search and read for various Case Studies given on the web site.

4.    Complete Assignment #10.


WEEK 15

1.    Review all the Chapters covered so far for the examination.

2.    Review all the Appendices.

3.    Complete Assignment #11.
