Principal Investigator

Dr. Ana C. Alba-Rubio

  • Postdoctoral research: Dept. of Chemical and Biological Engineering, University of Wisconsin-Madison.
  • Ph.D. Applied Physical Chemistry (Heterogeneous Catalysis). Autonomous University of Madrid & ICP-CSIC, Spain.
  • B.S. Chemical Engineering. University of Málaga, Spain.

Dr. Ana C. Alba-Rubio received a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Málaga, Spain in 2007. She then moved to the Institute of Catalysis and Petrochemistry (Spanish National Research Council, CSIC) in Madrid, Spain to pursue doctoral studies under the supervision of Dr. Manuel López Granados. Her Ph.D. focused on base and acid catalysis for biodiesel production from vegetable oils. After receiving her Ph.D., Dr. Alba-Rubio joined the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison to conduct postdoctoral research under the supervision of Prof. James A. Dumesic and Prof. Manos Mavrikakis. She focused on the controlled synthesis of metal, bimetallic and bifunctional catalysts for reaction of interest in biomass conversion and for the direct synthesis of H2O2 from H2 and O2. In 2015, she joined the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Toledo as an Assistant Professor.

Graduate Students

Ibeh Stephen Omodolor

PhD Student

Ibeh grew up in Nigeria. He received his bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering and graduated Cum Laude from the University of Lagos. During his senior year in college, he underwent a degree-required six-month internship at the Fluid Catalytic Cracking Unit of the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company (WRPC); a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Cooperation (NNPC). His undergraduate research was centered on experimental studies on a spray dryer. After which he earned a master's degree at the Institute of Petroleum studies Uniport/IFP France. His master's thesis was on modeling and optimization of propane precooled mixed refrigerant for energy efficiency.

Godfred Owusu

MS Student

Godfred grew up in Accra, Ghana. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Petroleum Engineering from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, Ghana. As an undergraduate, he completed internships with the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation. His research as an undergraduate centered on the development of the Jubilee Oil field in Ghana.

Caleb Hiddleson

MS Student

Caleb received his Bachelors in Chemical Engineering from UT in 2016. He has completed three Co-op rotations with Radco, a local R&D company during his undergraduate degree. Caleb was involved with Engineers Without Borders, filling several positions on the executive board and assisting with fundraising efforts for projects in Honduras and Kenya. After receiving his Bachelors, he was hired as the Manager of Process and Product Development at Radco for one year, serving as the company's chemical hygiene officer, chief researcher, and laboratory manager. Recently Caleb has left his job to pursue a Master's Degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Toledo and has assisted his wife in starting the first professional chapter of Engineers Without Borders in Toledo.

Undergraduate Students

Andrew J. Michalo Undergraduate Student, Co-op

AJ grew up in Dayton, Ohio. He is a senior Chemical Engineering student graduating in Spring 2018. He is looking forward to research. He believes this experience will help him to grow as an aspiring engineer. He has had previous industry positions related co-ops and want to know what it is like to get involved in a research position.

AnDréa Taulker Undergraduate Student, Co-op

AnDréa is from Fostoria, Ohio. She is a Chemical Engineering senior set to graduate in the Fall of 2018. She completed two co-op rotations with Perstorp Polyols in the quality assurance lab. Her pastimes include working on cars, attending automotive events, and playing video games as well as spending time with her family and animals. She looks forward to working in the lab this semester.

Joseph Andonegui Undergraduate Student, Co-op

Joseph is a third year Chemical Engineering at the University of Toledo. He is from Defiance, Ohio and this is his first co-op rotation. Some of the things he enjoys besides lab work are tennis and reading. He is very much looking forward to graduating and seeing what life has in store.

Shannon Saluga Undergraduate Student, Honors thesis

Shannon is from Mason, Ohio, and is a fourth-year chemical engineering and chemistry double major at UT. She has previously worked as a co-op at Glatfelter Paper Company as well as doing research under Dr. Wei Li in organic chemistry at UT and under Dr. Konstantinos Kavallieratos at Florida International University. In her free time, she tutors and does Supplemental Instruction for general and organic chemistry. She would like to eventually head onto grad school.

Josh Steiner Undergraduate Student, Honors thesis

Josh grew up in Doylestown, Ohio. He is currently in his third year of Chemical Engineering at the University of Toledo. Josh has done two co-op rotations at the Toledo Refining Company. Aside from school, Josh enjoys playing bass guitar at his church and with other various bands.
