BET HistoryThe first steps toward the development of a bachelor of engineering technology were taken by the College of Engineering in 1972. Lengthy studies conducted from 1969 through 1972 produced data that affirmed the need for the College to present a proposal to the President of the University. the Board of Trustees. and the Ohio Board of Regents to establish the Bachelor of Engineering Technology degree.A pilot program was developed in which students enrolled in University College for the 1972-73 academic year. The experience gained was very helpful in the preparation of the program proposal, which was submitted by James B. Farison. dean of engineering 1970-79. Upon approval of the program in 1974, Dean Farison appointed the assistant dean for engineering James W. Lacksonen program director and gave him responsibility for program development and student guidance. Twenty-seven students enrolled in the pilot program in the fall of 1972. By the fall of 1973, 63 students were committed to the program. Two-thirds of these students were in the mechanical area and the remainder in the electronics area the pilot program in University College confirmed that many students were employed by local industry and found that an evening program provided them with the greatest convenience. Enrollment was 162 m 1978-79 and 183 in 1979-80. Enrollment has continued to increase, and in fall 1992 the department had 293 students. Full-time faculty support is currently at six positions and part-time faculty support is currently at one position (professor emeritus). The unit also utilizes the teaching services of talented engineers from industry on a part-time basis. The department received a separate budget in 1983; prior funding for faculty salaries, staff, part-time instructors. and supplies was made available from the dean's budget. Needed equipment and laboratories were shared, mainly with the mechanical and engineering departments until 1993, when facilities for the department were completed. The first separate B.E.T. unit independent budget was $201.240. The departmental expenditures for the current year have reached $480,000 as of June 10, 1994. Dr. Ben Latigo, chairman and associate professor of engineering technology, joined the faculty in 1993. Since his arrival he has updated courses, administered to the needs of the students. and participated in the educational activities of the College and University. The University of Toledo Department of Engineering Technology is active in the activities of ASEE Engineering Technology Division.
