News: National Institute of Technology (NIT), Kurukshetra, India, has signed an MoU with the University of Toledo to co-operate in terms of academics and research (e.g. faculty exchange). The MoU encourages faculty, knowledge, and student exchange between both the parties. Given the above context, Dr. A. Kumar (Chair, Civil Engineering) and Dr. V. Devabhaktuni (Associate Professor, EECS Department), both from the University of Toledo, interacted with Department Chairs, Faculty, Postgraduate, and Undergraduate Students of Civil, Computer, ECE, and Electrical Departments of NIT. Drs. Kumar and Devabhaktuni held several meetings coordinated by the Center for Continuing Education & External Collaboration (CCEEC) of NIT during October 14-15, 2009. One of the several objectives is "graduate student recruitment". The meetings were attended by 150-200 faculty and students of NIT.

The IEEE University of Toledo Student Branch has been recognized as a recipient of the 2008 MGA Student Branch Membership Growth Award, by the IEEE Member and Geographic Activities Board (MGA), for success in member recruitment and retainment. Each year, a Student Branch in each Region is recognized as having achieved the highest growth rate. Dr. Vijay Devabhaktuni was instrumental in bringing this honor, by way of organizing a student membership drive sponsored by IEEE Toledo and SSOE.
Dr. Vijay Devabhaktuni has been elevated to the Senior Member grade of IEEE effective July 28, 2009.
Dr. Shenai has been awarded a research grant for "Modeling and Design of VHF PECVD Thin Film Deposition System" project by the Ohio Department of Development/Xunlight Corporation. The grant is $70,000 for the duration July 2009 - Dec. 2010.
EECS graduate student Arjun Akkala won the 3rd place in A&WMA’s Student Poster Competition for his poster titled “Artificial Neural Network Based Modeling and Prediction of Radon Concentrations”. This award includes a certificate and $600 check. The competition is part of the A&WMA Annual Conference 2009. The basis for the awards is technical quality and significance to environment. The student is working with Dr. Vijay Devabhaktuni and Dr. Ashok Kumar.
Dr. Vijay Devabhaktuni (jointly with Dr. Douglas Nims of the Department of Civil Engineering) has been awarded a research grant on "Magnetic Sensor for Nondestructive Evaluation" (Phase II) by the UT-UTC. The grant is $49,780 for the duration July 2009 - Dec. 2009. Graduate students involved in Phases I & II of this project are Bertrand Fernandes (EECS) and James Wade (CE).
University of Toledo Alumnus Tom Miller created a new technology so inexpensive to put into production that over the next year it’s rolling out as standard equipment on almost every vehicle Ford Motor Company builds. As the lead engineer behind Ford Motor Company’s new feature called MyKey™, Miller enables parents to encourage their teens to practice safer driving behavior and address the number one cause of teen fatalities – auto accidents.
Tom Miller explained and demonstrated this industry-first innovation and the process for developing technology like this at Ford Motor Company.
