Title: Development of mobile integration with auto aftermarket eCommerce and lot traceability for automotive plants
Sponsor: Pilkington North America, Inc.
Duration: August 14, 2012 – May 14, 2013
Amount: $50,000
Abstract: Pilkington, an automotive supplier in Toledo, OH, and The University of Toledo (UT) are motivated to build and sustain fruitful engineering and computer science collaborations. Pilkington needs to enhance its eBusiness system in the Aftermarket Glass Replacement business with the development of two new systems. The first system enhancement will improve the capability of the "point of sale" integration. The second enhancement will improve the capabilities of the current B2B eCommerce system providing new, state-of-the art API for B2B application integration and integration with the point of sale system. The project will run through the end of the 2012-2013 academic year and will involve two domestic MS students as well as undergraduate students.

Dr. Rashmi Jha has received an award from NSF

Dr. Rashmi Jha has received an award from NSF for her project entitled, " I-Corps: High Density Memristive Devices for Non-Volatile Memory Applications"
Award amount: $50,000
Award Start Date: 07/01/2012
Award Period: 6 months
PI: Dr. Rashmi Jha
In addition to the award money, Dr. Jha, her Ph.D. student (Branden Long) and her mentor (Dr. D'Naie Jacobs) will be trained by a highly qualified team of educators of national and international repute about research commercialization. As part of this program, the team will be attending a series of workshops at Georgia Tech this summer.

American Heart Association Grant

Dr. Makarand Deo has been awarded the Scientist Development Grant (SDG) of $308,000 by the American Heart Association (AHA). Dr. Vijay Devabhaktuni (Associate Professor, EECS Department) attracted last year Dr. Makarand Deo of the University of Michigan to join our department as a Research Assistant Professor. Since then, Dr. Deo is being mentored and supervised by Dr. Devabhaktuni. In addition to conducting research in the EECS Department, Dr. Deo is actively collaborating with the Interprofessional Immersive Simulation Center (through a PhD student co-advised by Dr. Boyers and Dr. Devabhaktuni).
Title: Role of Purkinje System Anatomy and Altered Calcium Dynamics in CPVT: A Modeling Study
Program Name: Scientist Development Grant (SDG)
Funding Agency: American Heart Association (AHA)
Award Amount: $308,000
Duration: 4 Years
American Heart Association's Scientist Development Grant (SDG) is an extremely prestigious grant award given to highly promising beginning scientists in their progress toward independence. The recipients of SDG award are chosen through a highly competitive selection process on National level. This is evident from the 14.4% success rate of the Winter 2012 SDG competition.

Dr. Rashmi Jha has been selected for the IBM Faculty Award for $40,000.

This prestigious IBM Faculty Award is a highly competitive worldwide program intended to foster collaboration between researchers at leading universities worldwide and those in IBM research, development and services organizations; and promote courseware and curriculum innovation to stimulate growth in disciplines and geographies that are strategic to IBM.
Through this award, IBM will provide Dr. Jha $40,000 for one year to perform research in collaboration with a mentor at T.J. Watson Research Center. The title of the research is: Novel Analog Reconfigurable Resistive Random Access Memory (ReRAM) Devices for Low-Power Extreme-Scale Neuromorphic Computing. This research is expected to lead to the development of Silicon chips that can learn and adapt like a biological brain for the next generation of computing. The award will be made through cash payment to the UT Foundation by IBM. Dr. Jha will support a full time Ph.D. student through this award.

Grant from Army Research Laboratory

Dr. Krishna Shenai has recently received a $1,465,668 (includes $465,668 cost match from the University) research grant from Army research Laboratory for a project entitled “Bulk Material Defects and Reliability of SiC Power Devices”. The period of project is September 22, 2011 through September 21, 2016.

Grant from California Energy Commission

Dr. Lingfeng Wang has recently received a $50,000 research grant from California Energy Commission for his one-year project entitled “Impacts of Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles on Distribution Network Reliability”. The total project size is $91,596 with UT contribution.

Grant from Wind Energy Corporation

Dr. Vijay Devabhaktuni (PI) and Dr. Lingfeng Wang have been awarded $88,277 (including UT contributions) by Wind Energy Corporation for the research project “Computer Aided Assessment of Renewable Energy Resources in Commercial Environments”

NSF Grant

Dr Rashmi Jha has received the research grant from NSF on the proposal titled “BRIGE: Transition Metal Oxide Based Multifunctional Nanoelectronic Memristor Devices”. The duration of the project is between October 1,2011 and September 30,2013. The grant funded by NSF is $171,089 and the total award amount is $228,692 including UT's contribution.

Grant from The Missile Defense Agency (MDA)

A joint STTR Phase 1 proposal by Imaging Systems Technology (IST) and Dr. Vijay Devabhaktuni (PI) entitled Innovative Hardware Technologies for Electromagnetic Attack Rejection in Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS) Radars has been awarded $99,994 for a 1-year period expected to begin in Fall 2011 by The Missile Defense Agency (MDA).

NASA SBIR Phase II Sub Contract for the project titled Frequency Steered Acoustic Transducer

A team of researchers consisting of Dr. Vijay Devabhaktuni (PI), Dr. Daniel Georgiev, Dr. Douglas Nims, and Dr. Hong Wang, have been awarded a 2-year $280,000 NASA SBIR Phase II Sub Contract ($476,919 including institutional contributions) for the project titled Frequency Steered Acoustic Transducer.

Libbey Grant

Dr. Daniel Georgiev (PI, 80% share), Dr. Bhaduri (Co-PI), and Dr. Gan (Co-PI), have been awarded a 2-year $110,238 Libbey grant for the project titled, "Phase-2: LED-based Illumination Optical Design and Research," starting in August 2011.

Grant from Midwest Microdevices (Toledo)

A research proposal entitled “Engineering and Fabrication of MEMS Devices” has been funded by Midwest MicroDevices (Toledo) for $40,695 including UT contribution. Investigators on this project are Dr. Rashmi Jha (PI) and Dr. Vijay Devabhaktuni.

Dr. Vijay Devabhaktuni has been appointed as the Secretary of the Energy Savings Commission by World Foundry Organization.

Dr. Daniel Georgiev's Grant

Dr. Daniel Georgiev has been awarded a research grant of $97,500($146,000 with UT's internal contribution) by Libbey Glass for the proposal titled "LED outdoor illumination and concentration photovoltaics optical design and research". The co-PIs on this grant are Dr. Daniel Georgiev (PI: Share 70%), Dr. Sarit Bhaduri and Dr. Yong Gan. This is the second phase of the project and the grant can support two eecs students.Phase-1 was funded an amount $30,000 in 2010.

Dr. Vijay Devabhaktuni's AFOSR Grant

A team of researchers consisting of Dr. Prabir Bhattacharya (UC), Dr. Vijay Devabhaktuni (UT), and Dr. Aihua Wood (AFIT) has been awarded a 3-year $498,688 grant by AFOSR (not including institutional contribution) for the project entitled Real-Time Combat Navigation System and Virtual Battlespace. Dr. Devabhaktuni thanks Dr. Samir Hefzy for his support with the grant application.

Prathamesh Ajgaonkar, Lingfeng Wang, and Mansoor Alam received Certificates of Appreciation from the IEEE for their contribution to the AUTOTESTCON 2010 Technical Program. Prathamesh Ajgaonkar, an MS student, presented the paper entitled, “Simulation Studies on ZigBee Communications for Home Automation and Networking” in Orlando, Florida.
IEEE AUTOTESTCON is a premier conference sponsored by the IEEE Aerospace and Electronics Systems Society and IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society in the fields of Systems Readiness Technology.

Dr. Vijay Devabhaktuni's NSF Grant

Dr. Vijay Devabhaktuni’s NSF proposal New Methodologies for System-Level Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Analysis of Electronic Systems has been awarded a grant of $379,997 to The University of Toledo with an effective date 09/01/10. Including UT contributions, the grant is $454,453 over a 3-year period. This is the highest research grant in the EECS Department from the NSF. This is Dr. Devabhaktuni’s 2nd NSF grant, since he joined UT in 2008. The grant is co-sponsored by NSF CMMI and ECCS Divisions. EECS Department congratulates Vijay (PI) on this prestigious accomplishment.

2010 IEEE Dayton Section Annual Awards Banquet

Dr. Krishna Shenai presented the keynote address entitled "Silicon Carbide (SiC): A Transformative Semiconductor for 21st Century Energy, Transportation, and Defense and Space Electronics," at the 2010 IEEE Dayton Section Annual Awards Banquet held at the Sinclair Community College in Dayton, OH on April 17, 2010. The photo shows Dr. Shenai being presented with an award plaque by Dr. Robert L. Ewing, Director of the Center for Innovative Radar Engineering, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, OH. Dr. Shenai is the Distinguished Lecturer of IEEE Electron Devices Society and Dr. Ewing is the Chair of IEEE Dayton Section.

Institute of Physics: IoP Select

Dr. Daniel Georgiev is a co-author of the paper "Long term aging of selenide glasses: evidence of sub-Tg endotherms and pre-Tg exotherms", Journal of Physics - Condensed Matter, Vol. 22 (2010) #065104 together with Ping Chen and Punit Boolchand from the University of Cincinnati. This publication was selected for inclusion in the Institute of Physics' prestigious "IoP Select" web site (http://Select.iop.org). The criteria for inclusion of a publication in this special selection of already published articles are stated by IoP as: "substantial advances or significant breakthroughs", "a high degree of novelty", and "significant impact on future research".

UT Experience Day

This event hosts students who have been admitted to the EECS Department for Fall semester 2010. It provides an opportunity for prospective students and their parents to learn about EECS academic programs and facilities, meet faculty and staff, participate in a Q&A session and get information on taking the next step. A luncheon is also provided, followed by guest speakers, including Mr. Thomas Miller, Product Development Engineer for Ford Motor Company, and other EECS alumni.

International Outreach

News: National Institute of Technology (NIT), Kurukshetra, India, has signed an MoU with the University of Toledo to co-operate in terms of academics and research (e.g. faculty exchange). The MoU encourages faculty, knowledge, and student exchange between both the parties. Given the above context, Dr. A. Kumar (Chair, Civil Engineering) and Dr. V. Devabhaktuni (Associate Professor, EECS Department), both from the University of Toledo, interacted with Department Chairs, Faculty, Postgraduate, and Undergraduate Students of Civil, Computer, ECE, and Electrical Departments of NIT. Drs. Kumar and Devabhaktuni held several meetings coordinated by the Center for Continuing Education & External Collaboration (CCEEC) of NIT during October 14-15, 2009. One of the several objectives is "graduate student recruitment". The meetings were attended by 150-200 faculty and students of NIT.

NSF Grant

Dr. Krishna Shenai (Principle Investigator) has been awarded a $174,988 grant by the NSF’s Computer Network Systems (CNS) Division for the proposal titled II-NEW: High-Performance Scalable Computing Infrastructure. The period of the NSF grant is August 1, 2009 through July 31, 2012. The co-PIs on this grant are Dr. Vijay Devabhaktuni (EECS Dept.), Dr. Duane Hixon (MIME Dept.), Dr. Sanjay Khare (Physics Dept.) and Kevin Czajkowski (GEPL Dept.).

2008 MGA Student Branch Membership Growth Award

The IEEE University of Toledo Student Branch has been recognized as a recipient of the 2008 MGA Student Branch Membership Growth Award, by the IEEE Member and Geographic Activities Board (MGA), for success in member recruitment and retainment. Each year, a Student Branch in each Region is recognized as having achieved the highest growth rate. Dr. Vijay Devabhaktuni was instrumental in bringing this honor, by way of organizing a student membership drive sponsored by IEEE Toledo and SSOE.

IEEE Senior Member

Dr. Vijay Devabhaktuni has been elevated to the Senior Member grade of IEEE effective July 28, 2009.

Ohio Department of Development/Xunlight Corporation Research Grant

Dr. Shenai has been awarded a research grant for "Modeling and Design of VHF PECVD Thin Film Deposition System" project by the Ohio Department of Development/Xunlight Corporation. The grant is $70,000 for the duration July 2009 - Dec. 2010.

Air & Waste Management Association’s (A&WMA’s) Student Poster Competition

EECS graduate student Arjun Akkala won the 3rd place in A&WMA’s Student Poster Competition for his poster titled “Artificial Neural Network Based Modeling and Prediction of Radon Concentrations”. This award includes a certificate and $600 check. The competition is part of the A&WMA Annual Conference 2009. The basis for the awards is technical quality and significance to environment. The student is working with Dr. Vijay Devabhaktuni and Dr. Ashok Kumar.

UT-UTC Grant

Dr. Vijay Devabhaktuni (jointly with Dr. Douglas Nims of the Department of Civil Engineering) has been awarded a research grant on "Magnetic Sensor for Nondestructive Evaluation" (Phase II) by the UT-UTC. The grant is $49,780 for the duration July 2009 - Dec. 2009. Graduate students involved in Phases I & II of this project are Bertrand Fernandes (EECS) and James Wade (CE).

Ford MyKey™ Presentation and Demonstration

University of Toledo Alumnus Tom Miller created a new technology so inexpensive to put into production that over the next year it’s rolling out as standard equipment on almost every vehicle Ford Motor Company builds. As the lead engineer behind Ford Motor Company’s new feature called MyKey™, Miller enables parents to encourage their teens to practice safer driving behavior and address the number one cause of teen fatalities – auto accidents.
Tom Miller explained and demonstrated this industry-first innovation and the process for developing technology like this at Ford Motor Company.

Talk by John Mufich ,Chief Information Officer from First Solar, January 28

The talk was on Opportunities in Computer Science concerning solar energy, it focused on reducing the cost associated with the solar electricity and thus enabling it to become a sustainable mainstream energy. It was a very delightful talk which was attended by the Chairman of the EECS department, along with all the faculty member and graduate students

EECS Library and Conference Room Dedication, November 5

The EECS Department held the dedication of the new EECS Library and EECS Conference Room on November 5, 2008. At this befitting function, Dr. Eric Summons, Selection Resource, inaugurated the new Library and Conference Room. The dedication was followed by a talk on "Complex Jobs and Organizations" by Dr. Summons. Dr. Shenai and Dr. Molyet then presented the department updates and UG curriculum updates respectively.

EECS Graduate Seminar by Dr. Aihua W. Wood, October 24

Dr. Aihua W. Wood, Professor of Mathematics at Air Force Institute of Technology presented a seminar "Analysis and Numerical Solution for Electromagnetic Wave Propagation" on October 24. In this talk she discussed the electromagnetic scattering phenomena in two settings 1) Induced by cavities embedded in a perfectly electrically conducting (PEC) ground plane and 2) By bodies of revolution (BOV).

EECS Graduate Seminar by Dr. Robert F. Davis

Dr. Robert F. Davis, Professor at Carnegie Mellon University presented a seminar "Initial and Subsequent Modes of Growth AIN, GaN and ZnO Semiconductor Films" on October 15. He talked about the III- Nitrides of AIN, GaN and InN, their soild solutions, and ZnO form in the wurtzite crystal structure. Lateral growth techniques to reduceboth the residual stresses and the dislocation density in GaN films were presented.

EECS Graduate Seminar by Dr. C.J. Reddy, October 8

Dr. C. J. Reddy, President of EM Software and Systems (USA) Inc presented a seminar "Design of UHF ID Systems with the Aid of Compuataional Electromagnetics". He talked about the application of computational electromagnetic (CEM) tools for analyzing and optimizing complex environments for ultra high frequency (UHF) RFID systems. Analysis of RFID tags, readers, tag placement, tag/reader coupling and tag/reader systems in complex environments were also addressed.

Alan Husted's Retirement, September 30

After more than 30 years of service to the EECS department, Alan Husted celebrated his retirement with the friends, colleagues and students on September 30. On this bitter sweet occasion Al talked about how he started work in the department and what his future plans are.

Lorain Campus Students' Visit, September 24

Students from the Lorain Campus visited the EECS Department on September 24. They also visited the Career Fair hosted by the College of Engineering. Dr. Shenai, EECS Department Chair, talked to the students breifly about their experiences and expectations from the Distance Learning partnership between the EECS department and LCCC.

EECS Department Faculty Meeting, September 12

A faculty and staff meeting of the EECS Department chaired by Prof. Krishna Shenai was held on 12 September, 2008. In this meeting, Prof. Ted Keith (MIME Department) presented a seminar on Effective Mentoring of Graduate Students. Prof. Dan Solarek (Chair of ET Department) talked about CSE vs. CSET accreditation. Dr. Shenai high-lighted the changes, news and updates in the EECS Department, and invited questions. Prof. Rick Molyet, Prof. Mansoor Alam, and Prof. Vijay Devabhaktuni talked about the U/G Curriculum, New Graduate Program Implementation, and Fall 2008 EECS Seminar respectively. Finally, Prof. Chris Kiel (EECS Faculty at LCCC) introduced Alice and Media Computation. At the end of the meeting, coffee, pizza and pop were served.
