Mission Statement of the EECS Department

The mission of the EECS Department is to educate future engineers and scientists in the fields of electrical engineering and computer science; to contribute to the body of knowledge in the fields of electrical engineering and computer science; and to conduct research and contribute to the development of innovative solutions to address diverse technological and societal needs.

EECS Department offers two degree programs: i) The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Engineering (BSCSE) and ii) The Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE). Both programs are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of ABET, http://www.abet.org/. The CSE program is also accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission (CAC) of ABET, http://www.abet.org/. Details about the degree programs are available from the EECS webpages. EECS Department offers Masters degree in Electrical Engineering (thesis option as well as non-thesis option) and Masters degree in Engineering (thesis option as well as non-thesis option) with concentration in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE). Doctoral degrees are also offered in Engineering with concentration in Electrical Engineering (EE) as well as concentration in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE). 05/15/12		Dr. Mohammed Niamat has been awarded $16,000 as REU (Research Experiences for Undergraduates) from NSF as supplement to the project , “A Digital/VLSI Test and Reliable Computing Research Laboratory” to fund two undergraduate students for one year. Click here details
05/09/12		Dr. Rashmi Jha has been awarded $12,000 from NSF as REU supplement to Dr. Jha’s NSF – BRIGE award received last year. Three undergraduate students will be doing their Co-OPs with Dr. Jha in her Nanoelectronic Material and Devices lab this summer on this grant.

04/02/12		We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Min Song as a Professor in the EECS Department. He received his PhD from the University of Toledo in 2001. His research interests include design, analysis, and evaluation of cognitive radio networks, wireless sensor networks, wireless mesh networks, WLAN, and mobile ad-hoc networks, and network security. He has secured more than $2 million research funding from NSF, DOE, and NASA, and published more than 110 technical papers. Dr. Song is the recipient of NSF CAREER Award and the recipient of DOE GAANN Award. Currently Dr. Min Song is on leave from the University of Toledo and serving at the National Science Foundation as the Program Director of CNS/CISE. Click here details

11/13/11		A paper co-authored by EECS PhD candidate Mr. Jiakai Li and Dr. Gursel Serpen received the First Runner Up Best Application Paper Award from the Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS 2011) conference which was held October 31st through November 2nd, 2011 in Chicago, Illinois. The award-winning paper is entitled “TOSSIM Simulation of Wireless Sensor Network Serving as Hardware Platform for Hopfield Neural Net Configured for Max Independent Set.”

11/16/09		Award: EECS Graduate Student, David Kvale, received the “Superior Presentation Award” in the Sigma Xi International Research Conference held in Houston, TX during Nov. 12-15, 2009. His presentation entitled “A Neural Network Based Approach to Estimate the Electric Field from a Source within a Perforated Enclosure” was well-attended and received excellent remarks from all the Judges. This award includes a certificate, medallion, and an invitation to join the Sigma Xi (The Scientific Research Honor Society) as an associate member. David is working with Dr. Vijay Devabhaktuni and Dr. Zulfiqar Khan.

While the PI on this grant is from the MIME Department, EECS Prestige Faculty Dr. Sanjay Khare (Physics) is a co-Investigator. The start date is 09/01/2009.

08/07/09		Dr. Krishna Shenai (Principle Investigator) has been awarded a $174,988 grant by the NSF’s Computer Network Systems (CNS) Division for the proposal titled II-NEW: High-Performance Scalable Computing Infrastructure. The co-PIs on this grant are Dr. Vijay Devabhaktuni (EECS Dept.), Dr. Duane Hixon (MIME Dept.), Dr. Sanjay Khare (Physics Dept.) and Kevin Czajkowski (GEPL Dept.).
08/01/09		Dr. Lingfeng Wang joined an expert team for editing a book entitled “Modeling and Control of Smart Grid Systems”. Contributions for the book chapters are invited for publication by Springer. For details on the chapters, click here.
08/01/09		The IEEE University of Toledo Student Branch has been recognized as a recipient of the 2008 MGA Student Branch Membership Growth Award, by the IEEE Member and Geographic Activities Board (MGA).

06/22/09		Dr. Lingfeng Wang was recently appointed as the Chair of Student Awards Committee to administer travel grants and select the best papers in IEEE Joint Conference on Neural Networks 2009, Atlanta. It is one of the three flagship conferences in IEEE Computational Intelligence Society.
06/19/09		EECS graduate student Arjun Akkala won the 3rd place in the Air & Waste Management Association’s (A&WMA’s) Student Poster Competition. This award includes a certificate and $600 check. The basis for the awards is technical quality and significance to environment. The student is working with Dr. Vijay Devabhaktuni and Dr. Ashok Kumar. Here is a brief description.
