Department of Bioengineering
- Dr. Mohamed Samir Hefzy, Professor and Interim Associate Dean of Graduate Studies were recently awarded a grant from
the National Science Foundation for his work in "Analysis, Modeling and Determination of The Three Dimensional Behavior
of the Human Knee Joint in Deep Flexion". Co-investigators on the project are T. Henry, J. Goitz, J. Zeiss, M. Dennis and
Vijay Goel, Professor and Chair of Bioengineering.
- Sairyo K, Vadapalli S, Goel V, Takata Y, Masuda A, Biyani A, Ebraheim N, Katoh S, Yasui N: Biomechanical basis for
using signal changes of pedicle on MRI as an indicator for early diagnosis of spondylolysis poster has won the Special
Emphasis Best Poster Award at 31st Annual Meeting of the International Society for the Study of Lumbar Spine, Porto,
Portugal, May 31- June 5, 2004. It is a collaborative work between the University of Toledo Bioengineering group (Sasi
Vadapalli, Vijay Goel, Ashok Biyani and Nabil Ebraheim) and the Tokushima University group (Koichi Sairyo, Y Takata, A
Masuda, S Katoh, N Yasui).
- Michele Martinez, Academic Program Coordinator was selected to participate in the recent Diamante Awards held on
September 10, 2004. The Diamante Awards is an annual awards ceremony recognizing outstanding leadership and accomplishments
in the Latino community. This was the 15th year for the Diamante Awards hosted by Owens Community College, in partnership
with, The University of Toledo, Bowling Green State University, The Medical College of Ohio and Daimler Chrysler.
Department of Chemical Engineering
- Dr. Abdul-Majeed Azad, Associate Professor of Chemical and Environmental Engineering and Dr. Martin Abraham,
Professor and Dean of the Graduate School recently were awarded a one year research grant for $137,005 for research
on desulphurization of jet fuel from Nasa Glenn.
- Julie Fischer-Kinney was awarded the 2005 NACADA Region 5 Scholarship Grant ($500) towards the expense of coursework
she is taking through Kansas State University. Julie is currently enrolled in a class entitled "Foundations of Academic
Advising" which is part of the NACADA Graduate Certificate Program in Academic Advising. Julie is currently in the Ph.D.
program working towards a degree in Higher Education. The Region 5 Scholarship grant is a very competitive scholarship
and is awarded to the top ranking students in the Region.
- Ashley Krout (junior in CHEE) has just received notification that she has been selected to receive the 2005 Student
Award for Outstanding Research in the undergraduate student category from the Society for Biomaterials. She was nominated
by Dr. Hai Bo Wen (her co-op employer - Depuy). This prestigious award is specifically given to "student researchers who
have shown outstanding achievement in biomaterials research." As the recipient she will receive a certificate of award
from the Society for Biomaterials. She will also receive travel and lodging expense reimbursement for up to $500 and
free registration for the 2005 Annual Meeting in Memphis, Tennessee. In addition, her paper submitted as part of the
award nomination will be considered for publication in the Journal of Biomedical Materials Research or Applied Biomaterials.
- Drs. Maria Coleman, Professor (CHEE), Jayatissa Ahalapitiya, Associate Professor (MIME) and Abdul-Majeed Azad,
Assistant Professor (CHEE) recently were awarded the Interdisciplinary Research Initiation Award in the $50,000 category.
- Ms. Emily Barron and Mr. Rich Sprinzl, undergraduate students recently was awarded the 2004-2005 Ohio Environmental
Science and Environmental Scholarship ($2,500) through the Ohio Academy of Science.
Department of Civil Engineering
- Congratulations to Chett Siefring, Mary Robbins, Clint Messner and Carlyn Whimore for winning the Geo-Challenge
competition. The competition will be held at the ASCE Geo-Frontiers Congress 2005 in Austin, TX on January 24, 2004.
This is the first time that this competition has been held. At the competition, the students will have to construct a
miniature reinforced-soil retaining wall system. They will be judged on many things including the design, construction
and performance of their wall. The wall construction will be a timed event which will be included in the scoring.
- ASCE will provide up to $2000 travel expenses for the student and registration fees for the four team members and one
faculty advisor. Faculty advisors for the group are Dr. Andrew Heydinger and Associate Dean Brian Randolph of the
Department of Civil Engineering.
- Dr. Brian Randolph, Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies and Professor was named ASCE Engineer of the Year for the
City of Toledo in May 2004.
- Mr. Matt Choma, alumni (BSCE & MSCE) from the UT College of Engineering was named ASCE Young Engineer of the
Year for the City of Toledo in May 2004. His advisor was Dr. Brian Randolph.
- Dr. Ashok Kumar, Professor took 5 graduate students to the AWMA-NOC (Air and Waste Management Association) conference
in Cleveland and they made three poster presentations. He will also be taking took 6 students to Indianapolis to
attend AWMA'S 97th Annual Conference and Exhibition to present papers and posters. The conferene was held June 22 - 25, 2004.

- Dr. Devinder Kaur, Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science has received a research grant from DaimlerChrysler
Challenge Fund. The project is entitled "Development of a CAE Tool Based on a Neural-Fuzzy Network-Based System for Efficient Selection of
Laser Welding Parameters." The grant was funded for $50,000.
- Dr. Devinder Kaur, Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science received a research grant of
$61,831 ($50,000 sponsor and $11,831 UT) from the DaimlerChrysler Challenge Fund. The project is titled "Development of a
CAE Tool Based on a Neural-Fuzzy Network-Based System for Efficient Selection of Laser Welding Parameters."
Mechanical, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering Department
- Professor Ahalapitiya H. Jayatissa, Assistant Professor of MIME presented two papers in Optics East
(http://www.spie.org/Conferences/Calls/04/oe/) Symposium held in Philadelphia on October 25-27.
- Dr. Walter Olson, Professor was recognized for his involvement in the Global Conference on Sustainable Product Development
and Life Cycle Engineering at the Production Technology Center in Berlin from September 29, 2004 - October 1, 2004.

- Dr. Ioan Marinescu has published a new book in the area of Tribology. The book is entitled "Tribology of Abrasive
Machining Processes". Co-authors are Brian Rowe, Boris Dimitrov and Ichiro Inasaki.
- The Micro-Machining Center participated in the International Manufacturing Technology Show, which was held in Chicago,
September 8-15, 2004. This is the largest show in the world. PMMC received a booth from Manufacturing Technology Association
of America from Washington DC. The center presented posters and machine-devices at the technology show. The PMMC display
was on display in the Emerging Technology Pavilion.
- Dr. Ioan Marinescu was recently designated as a Visiting Professor at The Asian Institute of Technology in the
area of Nano-Micro Fabrications Technology. The Asian Institute of Technology is located in Thailand. Dr. Marinescu
also served as a distinguished lecturer at the institute as well.
- Dr. Douglas Oliver was recently awarded the "Best Paper" award in the Legal Affairs publication for 2003-2004.
Dr. Oliver's paper was entitled "Whistle Blowing Engineering".
