Choose Ohio First For Engineering Entrepreneurship (COFFEE) Scholarship

The University of Toledo’s Colleges of Engineering and Natural Sciences & Mathematics have been awarded a major grant from the State of Ohio to sponsor up to twenty(20) $4,500 Choose Ohio First for Engineering Entrepreneurship (COFFEE) Scholarships for the 2014-15 academic year (enrollment for two semesters). COFFEE Scholarships are being used to recruit and support engineering and science students who will receive an excellent technical education, supplemented by completion of the University of Toledo Entrepreneurship, Family and Small Business Minor and apply their new knowledge immediately through co-op experiences in growing Ohio businesses. The Choose Ohio First Scholarship Program is funded by the State of Ohio with the objective of increasing the number of engineering and science graduates, and retaining them in the state, equipped with the entrepreneurial training needed to support economic growth for Ohio.

The COFFEE team is led by the University of Toledo and includes The Ohio State University, Lorain County Community College, Owens Community College and Stark State College of Technology. Key agency partners include the Regional Growth Partnership and Launchpad Incubation from northwest Ohio, as well as five university and public organizations dedicated to promoting entrepreneurship. In addition, the Ohio Supercomputer Center, Battelle, Plastic Technologies, Inc., SSOE, Inc., Xunlight, Inc. and Xunlight 26 Solar will provide advice, entrepreneur-mentors and co-op employment to scholarship recipients.

The COFFEE Scholarship program encompasses diverse fields across the breadth of engineering and the sciences that are important to Ohio’s economy. The students receive both educational and experiential elements throughout their degree programs. They receive mentoring and encouragement to commercialize their innovations. Scholarship recipients develop a personal entrepreneurship professional development plan in their first year, under the direction of an experienced entrepreneur-mentor. The students’ plans have milestones that include educational elements embedded in the curricula, a timeline for courses and/or work experiences to meet program criteria, an idea generation journal and documentation, and experiential reflections.

New co-op placement opportunities are being developed with COFFEE industrial partners, other employers from the UT portfolio of over 1000 company sites throughout Ohio and start-up companies identified by the RGP and other agency partners.

To receive funding during the first year of COFFEE, those students who are selected must: 1) enroll in engineering or science at the University of Toledo this fall; 2) select an approved engineering or science major; 3) begin the Entrepreneurship, Family and Small Business Minor; and 4) register with the Engineering Career Development Office or the UT Career Services Office. These scholarships are renewable for a total of 8 semesters in an approved engineering or science major (contingent upon continued funding from the State of Ohio), subject to progress toward the benchmarks listed in the table below. The scholarship will be revoked if a student leaves an approved engineering or science major, or fails to meet benchmarks.

The COFFEE scholarship program is intended to attract and retain the brightest graduates from Ohio high schools as they become engaged in the commercialization of new innovations in Ohio. The improved collaboration between Ohio technology companies and university students and researchers will enhance the climate of innovation and commercialization needed for economic growth and attract an entrepreneurial technical workforce back to Ohio. At the conclusion of the scholarship program, a new, lasting program and culture of entrepreneurship will remain to benefit future graduates of engineering and the sciences from Ohio institutions.

Note that funding for COFFEE is provided by the State of Ohio. If the State of Ohio discontinues funding, this scholarship program will end immediately.
