CIVE 1100: Measurements and CAD for CE’s Safety Instructions

 

This content is covered in lectures in the beginning of the course.  When student survey teams are outside they wear the appropriate safety equipment and mark their instruments with safety cones.

 

SURVEYING SITE SAFETY

 

1)      Act professional.  Accidents happen when you goof-off.

2)      Watch for moving vehicles.  Do not assume they see you.

3)      Protect yourself and your equipment with traffic cones and vehicle flashers.

4)      Be aware of your surroundings.

5)      Wear a safety vest and be alert.

6)      Look for hazards: overhead wires (with level rod), utility markings, electric fences, poison ivy, open excavations

7)      When setting points: i.e. control, property corners, etc., look for buried hazards: i.e. dog fence, tv cable, etc.

8)      Be cautious on and around RR tracks. Trains can sneak up on you!

9)      As a surveyor, it is your responsibility to maintain and or calibrate your equipment.

10)  Seek permission to trespass on private property when possible.

11)  You are responsible for all damages to private and public property that you cause.

12)  When cutting brush, be aware of your fellow workers.

13)  Do not use steel tapes near electric wires.

14)  Do not throw survey equipment.

15)  Know where the first aid kid is and emergency numbers.

16)  Report all injuries to your supervisor, no matter how minor.  This protects you and your employer.

17)  Never use damaged equipment.  Report broken equipment to your supervisor.

18)  No personal radios on job site.

19)  Wear appropriate eye, ear and head protection. Ask if hard hats, steel toe boots and hearing protection are required.  Use Them!

20)  Avoid confined spaces:

a.       One that is small enough to fit into.

b.      Is not designed for continuous occupation.

c.       Has limited means of entrance/exit.

21)  Be aware of heat stroke/frost bite.

22)  Drink non-alcoholic and non-caffeinated liquids.

23)  Determine if job safety board is posted.  Read and follow rules.

24)  Do not throw any equipment.

25)  Do not perform any task that you are not trained in.

26)  Locate first aid kit.

27)  Know emergency numbers: “(419) 530-2600”, “911”
