2009 Distinguished Alumnus receives National Space Trophy
William (Bill) Gerstenmaier, Associate Administrator for Space Operations,
NASA and UT College of Engineering Distinguished Alumnus-'09, received the
2010 National Space Trophy on April 30, 2010. Gerstenmaier was selected by
the RotaryNASA Board of Directors.

Nominated by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Pepera, 29,
a chemical engineer, provides a blend of process engineering and automation
engineering with a focus on oil refining. He is presently working on water
projects as an instrumentation and controls engineer.

Jeffrey Smith and Braeden Gilchrist will be accompanying Dr. Calvin Li as part of
a faculty-student research team at the National Renewable Energy Lab. They have
been chosen to participate in state-of-the-art research with the U.S.
Department of Energy in Golden, Colorado.

Dr. Moshin Jamali, Professor EECS, was recently awarded a grant from the Air Force
Research Laboratory (AFRL), under the DAGSI program, for the "Fast Fourier
Transform FPGA/ASIC Architecture Simulator/Generator" project. This grant
will provide support for one research assistant for Dr. Jamail's PhD student
for one full year.
University of Toledo's first greenhouse gas inventory was conducted by Dr.
Defne Apul's Sustainability Engineering Class students. This first estimate
showed that UT's current annual carbon footprint is approximately 82,300
metric tons of CO2. Students presented the results to UT president Dr.
Jacobs and his senior leadership team on April 28, 2010. Photo shows Dean

Graduate Student, Colleen Gorey selected by North American Membrane Society (NAMS) for award.
Colleen M. Gorey, Ph.D. candidate in Chemical & Environmental Engineering has been
selected to receive the NAMS 2010 Travel Award. A record-high number of 70 individuals
applied this year and the awards selection was extremely competitive. The award includes
a prize of $1,000 for reimbursement of travel cost associated with the 2010 NAMS meeting.
The awards will be announced dining the dinner banquet of the meeting in Washington D.C.
this July.
